About Ruben
A serial entrepreneur and three-time chief executive who has led companies through three successful exits. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he also served as an Executive Fellow, and a doctorate in psychology. He has climbed Mount Everest.
The story
I trained as an industrial and systems engineer and spent most of my career in medical technology. I built companies there and sold them, and by the usual measures the life worked.
In 2019 I stepped away from work for five years. I wanted to understand why capable people, myself first, keep repeating patterns they can already name. That time included a doctorate in psychology. It ended on Everest.
Much of what I teach was tested under exhaustion, at altitude and over marathon distances before I trusted it enough to write it down. Before Everest, a friend gave me a rule I still keep: write your go and no-go criteria while you are clear, and follow them when you are not. On the Khumbu Icefall I turned around once because of a criterion I had written in advance. I reached the summit on a second window.
In 2024 I went back to work. I write Mastery Lessons every week.
“I took five years away to find what I now teach. You will not need to leave your life to learn it.”
Why it can be taught
The ideas come from philosophy, depth psychology and current research, and from teachers I am grateful to. They are thanked by name in the book, and none of them endorses this program. What is mine is the distilling and the testing.
You don’t need a PhD to live it. It took one to see it.
How I work
I am a Board Certified Coach and a Professional Fellow of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, and I founded the Positive Psychology Institute, where I taught in 2025 and 2026. I hold a doctorate in psychology. I am not a licensed psychologist or psychotherapist, and this work is coaching and education.
I use AI openly, in research and drafting, the way I’d use any good instrument. The question that matters is whether the thinking and the judgment are mine, and nothing goes out under my name that I haven’t made my own.
