The year

Twelve principles, one a month. About five minutes a day.

The year opens at a threshold, meeting the unknown with curiosity, and closes at another, letting go. Between them, each month takes one principle, one practice and one question.

Month 1

Every extreme is a signal to return.

Month 2

You can act only from where you are.

Month 3

Read the season before you choose the effort.

Month 4

What you believe shapes what you see.

Month 5

Understand the limits that shaped everyone, yourself included.

Month 6

Accept what is so, and keep your pen.

Month 7

Trust what you know from center, and check it.

Month 8

Let your calendar, your money and your word agree.

Month 9

What you do is what you chose.

Month 10

Knowing becomes wisdom in the doing.

Month 11

Small, sure steps, kept for a year.

Month 12

What you received is yours to pass on.

Daily

First Light and The Account. No streaks are counted.

Morning · two minutes

First Light

The month’s principle, and what deserves this day.

Evening · three minutes

The Account

Each target kept or missed, one line on what held, and tomorrow’s Minimum.

After a miss, you return the next day. The record that matters is the return.

Weekly

Notice, interrupt, practice, review.

Notice

Catch the old pattern as it starts, while there is still a choice.

Interrupt

Break it once, on purpose, in a small way.

Practice

Do the month’s work, in the life you already have.

Review

Ask the month’s question, and say the four precepts from memory.

The Ledger

Your numbers, read against your own baseline.

The Ledger reads five domains: sleep, body and health, money, time, and relationships. It shows trends only. There are no scores, no rankings, and no comparisons with anyone else.

An accurate wearable is encouraged: Oura, WHOOP or Garmin. It is not included, and its data stays with you. Nobody in the program sees more than the monthly summary you choose to share, and you are never asked to put health or money figures into an AI tool.

Targets

A Minimum for the worst day, a Full Measure for a good one.

In Month 1, you set three to five behavior targets. Where research names a minimum effective dose, the Minimum follows it.

Steps: about 7,000 a day, where most of the measured benefit arrives (a 2025 meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health). Sleep: seven hours or more on a regular schedule (the consensus of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society; a 2024 study in Sleep found regular timing a stronger predictor of mortality than duration).

If you have a health condition, set your targets with your physician. Nutrition stays with your physician or dietitian.

The medium

An hour a week, given whole.

Love runs beneath all twelve months. Each week, one hour goes to the people closest to you, with the phone in another room.
